A girl is held by another girl of the tribe while the "cut" takes place.WHO's Printable Fact Sheet on FGM This black and white hand out is easily printed and contains information and statistics about FGM. WHO uses a different categorization of the types of FGM. Friends of Mercy uses the categories from USAID, our governments categories.

U.S. Department of State: Kenya: Report on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) or Female Genital Cutting (FGC) - This site explains the U.S. participation in trying to end FGM. The numbers of girls that are cut:

It is not practiced among the two largest ethnic groups in Kenya’s far West, the Luos and the Luhyas. The Ministry of Health statistics by tribal affiliation are: Kisii - 97 percent; Masai - 89 percent; Kalenjin – 62 percent; Taita and Taveta – 59 percent; Meru/Embu groups – 54 percent; Kikuyu – 43 percent; Kamba – 33 percent; Miji Kenda/Swahili – 12 percent."  FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION IN THE UNITED STATES

It is estimated that 130 million girls and women have undergone FGC. Approximately 2 million are subjected to this practice each year worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 168,000 women and girls in the United States had either undergone FGC or were at risk for FGC in 1990. Of these, 48,000 were girls younger than 18 years old. Read more...
