The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenya creatively assists with AIDS Orphans by helpling local congregations build "Widow Homes." There are thousands of widowed women as the result of husbands dying of HIV\AIDS. In the majority of instances, the wife didn't realize her husband was infected with HIV. Once the husband begins to lose weight from the "skinny" disease, the family then begins to suspect the HIV virus. The wife often will be infected with HIV and will now do her best to raise her children, while battling the HIV virus and the pending onslaught of AIDS.
The
great news is that with the implementation of ARV's, the medicine
that keeps AIDS under control, these widows can live a long and
healthy life with proper nutrition. Therefore, they will be there
to raise their children. However, many of these widows live in
delapitated mud-dung homes.
This is where the ELCK steps in and helps the local congregation fund and build new mud-dung homes for the widows.
